Bernie's armwrestling career began in Edmonton in 1983 when he read an ad in the local newspaper about the Western Canadian Championship. He was the best amongst his friends so he thought he'd go and become the Western Canadian Champ. He entered with two of his friends and they all got destroyed. His arm was screwed up for three months after that. His friends both never competed again and he made it his goal to avenge his losses. That's where he met John Miazdzyk and never looked back. He moved to Vancouver in 1992 and got in touch with Dave Hicks and they got back into pulling once Patrick Callan arrived and got everyone re motivated.
Today Bernie resides in Coquitlam where he is still involved with coaching and refereeing whenever possible.
